Tutorial 2 - Your second tab

In tutorial 1, we went through how to create a simple tab detailing the breakdown of gender by marital status. For our second example we will examine a different tab to use some more features some of mTABWeb.

To return to the Question Selection view, click the 'Questions' button on the menu bar. For our next example, we need to remove the existing questions from the rows and columns. We can do this by dragging the questions back from the Rows/Columns to the Available Topics/Questions panel and dropping them there or alternatively we can click the 'New' button . This will automatically clear any questions on the Rows, Columns and Filter.

For our second example let us analyse the breakdown of brands by gender. Construct your tab with the Brand of Item Purchased question from the 'Brand Characteristics' topic on the columns (as this is the focus of our analysis) and the Gender question on the rows. Run the tab as before to move to the Spreadsheet View to view the results.

The results above show us that for Brand A there were 6082 respondents, 58.46% were male and 41.54% were female, and for Brand E there were 1275 respondents, 68.59% were male and 31.41% were female, etc. Because we have more columns than will fit on our screen, it would be useful to keep the row labels on the spreadsheet when scrolling across to see our columns.

This can be done by selecting cell C3 (one column across and one row down from row/column labels respectively) and going to View on the menubar. From here select the Freeze Titles option and mTABWeb will lock the row and column headings for you to view when scrolling around your spreadsheet.

After freezing the titles on the spreadsheet, you may find that there are columns or rows of data that contain no sample. These will probably be of no interest to you, but there is a quick and easy way to remove them in mTABWeb. In our current example you can see that Brands J and N in columns M and Q respectively have no sample. On the menubar, click Data and move to Zero Suppression. An extension dialogue will then appear. We wish to remove the columns with no sample, so click the Columns option.

You will see that the Brands J and N have now been removed from the spreadsheet results, enabling you to concentrate only on brands with a sample.

However you may be interested in seeing information only on certain specified brands. This is simple to achieve through the use of the Subset feature. To demonstrate this we need firstly to return to the Question Selection view using the button.

Then if we go to the Brand of Item Purchased question we placed on the columns earlier and right click, we can select the first menu option to enter the Subset Editor.

As you can see, the Subset Editor is a list of all the responses to a question. Responses labelled with a '+' are shown on the spreadsheet results and those with nothing next to them are not shown. As you can see in our example to the right, Brands J and N are no longer shown on the spreadsheet results as they have nothing next to them.

This illustrates the working of the Zero Suppression very well. When you use this feature, mTABWeb is simply creating a subset of all the responses with sample. To subset your own responses, you are manually telling mATBWeb which responses you wish to see.

In our example, let us assume we only wish to see the results for Brands A, D, E and M in our analysis. Firstly we need to remove the existing subset from our earlier Zero Suppression. To do this, right click in the Subset Editor and from the context menu select 'Unselect All'. Then simply click in the box next to the responses we want to see to show the + sign - in this case Brands A, D, E and M. When you have finished simply click OK and re-run the tab using the Run Tab button . The results for only the brands we are interested in will be displayed.
