| Miranda Mole's Birthday | |

![]() |
August saw Miranda Mole's Birthday come around again and, as has become traditional, the Gamma team were given a special day out treat to celebrate. Miranda's days out are always a surprise and this year was no exception. Here is a report by Angela Lukehust, one of our Assistant Managers. |
"The first challenge of the day was to navigate ourselves to the West Mersea Centre for Outdoor Learning; with a mixture of good old fashioned map reading for some, and GPS/Sat-Nav for others, we all arrived at the centre intact. Well, apart from one car that is, which finally arrived looking like it had gone off route and collided with multiple hay bales...which didn’t bode well for the first activity of the day, orienteering. During orienteering we were all able to learn basic map reading skills and had to find our way round the site, locating markers to solve the puzzles set by our Instructor. After a lovely picnic lunch and a slice of birthday cake we headed off to take part in a pioneering project. Using equipment provided and skills taught in the session, such as square lashing (ropes with knots), we had to build a bridge to enable us to cross a stream on the edge of the site. Being the great manager and team captain that Derek is he was able to polish his delegation skills by setting us all to work whilst he went to fetch the drinks…. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it! To test how well we had actually built our bridges we tried to get as many members of our teams as possible to go across them; sadly for our Gamma oppostion (Gamma Team One) they were clearly not very confident with theirs as one person crossed it whilst Gamma Team Two triumphed with five people crossing! Our final activity at West Mersea was “It’s a Knockout” (Jeux Sans Frontières). It was bouncy, wet and loads of fun, and was a good test to see who had listened to the instructions to bring a complete change of clothes! Events included testing our combat skills on the Gladiator pugil stick fighting, inflatable assault courses, bungee runs, tug of war and basketball water barrels. |

The inflatable assault courses involved each team racing against one another, bouncing and climbing through various inflatable obstacles, to then collect a ball at the end and return it to the teams bucket. No doubt, however, the instructors were looking forward to reverting back to having a group of school children compared to the antics of the senior management in our group…each took cheating to another level with one taking two balls, the next three, and then eventually the whole container of balls; didn’t they Keith and Derek!!? The Bungee run was a good chance for each team to pit their wits against one another in terms of strategy, as the cords were of differing elasticity. However, this was short lived when a certain someone didn’t know their own strength and broke the bungee cord. Don’t worry; we won’t mention any names...will we Joe!? The last event of the day was the basketball water barrels. I don’t think any of us expected at the start of the day that we would be throwing a basketball into a large container of water, climbing in after it, repeating this two more times before then trying to score a basket. However, from the laughter and shenanigans that went on we all relished in the chance to act like five year olds again! After a quick change into dry clothes we headed to the White Horse in Ramsden Heath for a lovely meal and for a chance to reflect on the days activities. Miranda also presented each member of the Gamma team with a thank you gift for all of their hard work over the last year. Along with sweets and chocolates everyone received a keepsake mug, personalised with things that remind her most about them." Miranda is already looking forward to next year’s birthday and would like to thank everyone who helped to make the day the success that it was. |
Gamma Supports "Children In Need" |

In late November, the Gamma team put on very special outfits to support the BBC's 'Children In Need' Charity. The whole office turned up to work in costume and some very good costumes there were. We saw Fred Flintstone, a Ballerina, a Priest, a Doctor as well as The Super Mario Brothers, Indians, Pirates, Gangsters..oh and Keith Floyd too. When the contributions were counted we had raised over £120 for the charity. |
